The German emperor William II decides the fortification of the hill of Mutzig in January 1893. Together with the fortification belt of Strasbourg, the fort (Feste) has to closes off the Rhine plain and to stop the French offensives in Alsace.
Armoured and electrified fortification in concrete, it is the prototype of the dispersed fortification of the XXs century.
7000 men were necessary to serve this huge defensive ensemble of 254 hectares. With numerous constructions and 22 armoured turrets it is, 1914, the strongest fortification in Germany.
You will visit some buildings linked by underground galleries and discover numerous original equipments: troop quarters, kitchen, well, bakery, power station, hospital… The way is 1, 5 km long and has much stairs. The indoor temperature is about 14 °.
The way outside presents firing trenches, artillery observation points, shelters and a battery of canons. It is also a nice walk with wonderful views over the plain of Alsace and the Vosges. |
